2nd April, 2016.
Well after a long offseason of surf, sun and fun for the kids it was back to the rugby field with a first round clash against Oatley. With a bit of a disjointed preseason due to some poor weather on training nights the kids went into the game very much, flying by the seat of their pants.
On a hot Saturday morning Oatley kicked off with a terrific return by Lachlan Edgell finishing just short of the try line. Oatley managed to cross our try line twice early in the game due to poor ball security at the break down by Burra. After a quick talking to by coach Sean, the kids started securing their ball and began making yards. This resulted in a number of first half tries by Burra.
With a large bench Burra had the ability to make a complete team swap half way through the first half enabling fresh legs to put on a few more tries.
After some half time instructions the kids seemed to settle well into their patterns. The defensive line got almost back to its structure from last season and the kids also starting to pop passes once tackled.
Not wanting to miss names of try scores, I won’t name them, but let’s just say they were shared amongst most of the team.
Player of the match and the receiver of ‘Crusher’ was a player who was absolutely outstanding in one on one defence, was often first to the break down and taking quick ball from there and when not in a position to use their pace to run around defenders, put their head down and ran hard up the middle. It was fully deserved by Sasha Lewis, well done.
A few things to work on for the team but a very successful first hit out for the team which saw the introduction of a number of new faces. We look forward to the season ahead.
Finally, a big thank you to Luke Anthony for volunteering himself play with Burra Gold, giving up his spot to play with his team mates, well done Luke.
