Girls Rugby 7’s – Following in the footsteps of Australia’s Olympic heroes.
The Australian Women’s team, won the gold medal while the Australian Men’s 7s team also put in a commendable performance. Their combined success at international level has increased interest and participation in Rugby 7s.
Rugby 7s is a unique, faster, modified 15s rugby game that allows for a quick outcome finishing in just 14 minutes of play. Sydney Rugby Union has seen the number of players enjoying this game sky rocket in the last few years. The game originated in Scotland in 1883 and is now an Olympic sport, played in many countries around the world.
As the name implies, there are only 7 players per team on the field at any one time. The game is fast and exciting and played by all ages and abilities.
Following a series of ad hoc competitions run in conjunction with NSWRU Development staff in 2016, the decision has been made to run a competition in 2017 for both Girls and Boys in the U10s through to U18s age groups.
The Girls 7s is a new concept for Burraneer. We currently have an U12s and U16s team and maybe even an U18s team.
Our U12 girls have recently played Rockdale. We are currently participating in Wave 1 of the Sydney Rugby 7s which is a fortnightly carnival played across Sydney. This concludes after Easter when Wave 2 will begin.
We are consulting with parents, before we commit to the second wave. Training is every Friday afternoon at 4.30 at John Dwyer Oval. New girls are always welcome. Just call the team manager to help them plan for group numbers.
Registration is required to be completed before matches. Link to SJRU registration page here
Decisions are made week to week depending on who is available to play and where the carnivals are.
